6 Week Post Natal Check
As a new mum, it’s hard to know what exactly you’re supposed to do. Adjusting to having a new addition to your family, figuring out new routines, having plenty of appointments and discussions around checking in with bub, vaccinations, and attending mother’s group can be tough enough.
Often, taking care of your little one can be all time-consuming, that we often forget that YOU as a mum have gone through a whole life-changing, body-changing experience over that nine-month pregnancy and birthing journey, and that journey continues after you give birth!
Having a check-in for YOU to make sure that YOU’RE healthy and well is just as important for this exact reason. This is where a postnatal check-in with your Women’s Health Physiotherapist is vital to make sure that you’re on the right track.
Generally speaking, a postnatal check happens at the 6-week mark, however, this might happen a little bit earlier for some women, and a little bit later for other women; it really depends on how you feel!
What does a 6-week check involve?
It will involve a discussion around YOU, YOUR BODY, and YOUR GOALS. We will ask you about your medical history, pregnancy journey, your birthing journey, how you are feeling right now and what you would like to achieve in the next stage of your life.
There will be a musculoskeletal assessment. This means that we will:
- look at the way that you move, and give you strategies as to moving better.
- address any injuries, pain, or niggles that you might be experiencing post-natally.
- assess and treat any abdominal separation that you might have.
- Look at the way that you breathe to help you in your recovery: believe it or not, this is something that we look at for most women because it’s so important!
We may also have a look at your pelvic floor and how it is functioning. This might involve an internal examination (with your consent) of your pelvic floor to see whether it can turn on, and how strong it is if it can. If you’ve had a caesarian section, we will also have a look at your c-section and assist you with your recovery.
The biggest thing to know about your 6-week postnatal check is that it is all about you and your recovery, and getting back to the things that you love doing! We’d love to be able to help you get back to where you want to be, so get in touch with our women’s health team today to get started.
